Breeze Airways and Avelo Airlines, two major low-cost competitors, are set to compete directly at New Haven’s Tweed Regional Airport in Connecticut. Breeze has recently added Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) to its route network, with nearly a dozen new flights along the East Coast set to launch this winter. Travelers can book these flights directly through Breeze’s website or app. The new routes include:
Both Breeze and Avelo emerged during the pandemic with a mission to connect smaller airports to popular destinations at affordable prices. Avelo has been the dominant carrier at New Haven, serving the airport exclusively for nearly three years. However, with more than half of Breeze’s new routes overlapping with Avelo’s, this competition is expected to drive prices down even further.
This rivalry is not new; the two airlines also clashed in July when Avelo launched service from Bradley International Airport in Hartford, one of Breeze’s key bases. Breeze operates a modern Airbus A220 fleet, offering domestic first-class recliner seats, while Avelo utilizes Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft with all-economy seating.
